Measure your gate before you order

A golf cart with bags loaded, on grass

Short answer: Before you order, measure the narrowest clear width and the lowest height of every opening the cart has to pass through, plus the turning room on both sides, and compare them with the cart’s overall width and height, roof and any lift included. A six-seater is longer and turns wider than a four-seater. Check where the delivery truck can stop, too.

The problem

A cart arrives on a lift-gate trailer, comes down onto the driveway, and then will not fit
through the side gate, or round the corner of the house, or into the shed it was bought to live in.
Nothing is wrong with the cart. Somebody just never measured.

What to measure

Three things, all of them the narrowest or lowest point rather than the average. The clear width
of every opening the cart must pass through, with the gate fully open and any latch or bolt
included. The height of anything it passes under: a garage door opening is not the same as the
garage door frame. And the turning space on both sides of a tight opening, because a cart cannot
crab sideways.

Compare against the right numbers

Use the cart’s overall width and height from the specification, not the seat width. If the cart
has a roof, the roof is usually the widest and tallest point. On a lifted cart, add the lift. If a
specification row reads “Not specified” on our site, ask us for the figure rather than
assuming a similar model’s number transfers. Our golf cart dimensions and weight guide lists the length, width, height and weight each maker publishes for the carts we sell.

Six-seaters need more than you think

A six-passenger cart is not a four with a bench added. It is a genuinely longer vehicle with a
wider turning circle. People who upgrade from a four often find the new cart will not make a turn
the old one managed easily.

Also check the route, not just the destination

Where will the truck stop? Is there room for a lift-gate trailer, and is the surface something a
cart can be rolled across without dropping a wheel into gravel or a drain? Steep driveways and soft
verges cause more delivery-day problems than narrow gates do.

Two minutes with a tape measure

It is the cheapest part of the whole purchase and it eliminates the single most common
disappointment. If any measurement is within a few inches of the cart’s dimensions, tell us before
you order and we will check it with you properly.
